Description

If you take the time to drive around the Coromandel Peninsula looking for homes that stand out, there is one building company name that seems to commonly have its sign on display: Rod Percival Builders Ltd. Rod has won many of the Registered Master Builders House of the Year Awards, and is also a leading Green Builder, committed to truly sustainable products and materials. Now Rod is proud to launch Percival designer Homes’ first Green Showhome, situated in Whitianga Waterway’s new Airfield subdivision at 1 Yankee Lane. Green Building Principles were the driving force behind the use of sustainable materials in the home. The weatherboard and fascia are both New Zealand grown cedar, whilst the interior walls have been plastered with American Clay, which along with the use of low VOC paints have created a healthy home. The American Clay was applied by the team from Earth Design Ltd, who are the importers, distributors and applicators of this amazing product in the Bay of Plenty area. Director Richard Gooch says that the company has seen a real rush in interest when it comes to eco-friendly building products, “with developers more and more keen to stake a claim in the sustainable game”. “People want a healthier environment for their family to grow up in,” he adds, “and Rod is proving that this option is both affordable and do-able for any family”. PlaceMakers Whitianga supplied the show home’s kitchen, with all products used getting the “green tick of approval,” says PlaceMakers Kitchen Consultant Susanne Cook. “We are hoping to lead the way when it comes to thinking green when designing your new home,” she explains, “and working with companies that think the same”. The kitchen’s Melteca cabinetry comes from the Laminex Group’s Greenfirst range, which is environmentally friendly as well as giving a great look. The Greenfirst range is The Laminex Group’s response to the growing awareness of the impact that building materials have on the environment. The Greenfirst range is a commercially viable and environmentally preferable range of products that carries certification by The New Zealand Ecolabelling Trust (Environmental Choice NZ). There is definitely no loss in design flexibility and product functionality, and there are plans for the range to expand greatly over the next few years. The kitchen also has appliances supplied by Peninsula Betta Electrical, whose proprietor, Grant Clayton, sourced them with eco-friendliness top of mind. “We were acutely aware of things like water rating and energy rating when we made our choices,” he says, “and consumers are thinking more and more that way too”. Even the Panasonic Plasma television he found for the home contains zero mercury and zero lead, and the speakers are crafted from bamboo! Audio Video Designs Ltd worked with Whitianga local Scott Byles of Coastline Integration to install a SpeakerCraft MZC66 multiroom system with AIM speakers into the home. As importers of premium multi-room audio/video and home automation products from the United States, they pride themselves on the fact that they are represented throughout New Zealand by resellers and installers who have been through rigorous training in all aspects of the products they supply and Scott is their key contact for the Whitianga district. Landscaper Garth Scott was passionate about creating the Whitianga home’s surroundings in a conscious manner, and his last additions to the gardens were a Greymate Water System to filter grey waste water from the washing machine so that it can be used to irrigate the gardens, and adding a small rainwater tank to collect water from the roof to be used for the organic vegetable garden. A wormfarm has also been established on site.
