At our new home studio, clients will be able to inspect all manner of eco-home/lifestyle options such as solar water heaters for home and greenhouse, composting toilets, recycled greywater system, extensive organic vege gardens and of course a solar tempered home made largely from natural and recycled materials.

Ecotect Ltd firmly established as the only residential design company in the Nelson area that specialises solely in AFFORDABLE eco home design and sustainable living systems. Projects are being undertaken all over the country.

Utilising intensively studied and tested Passive Solar Design techniques, Ecotect designs are able to provide real energy efficiency, quality comfort and cost effective housing for the benefit of our clients.

Ecotect designs incorporate locally and nationally sourced building materials and components wherever possible to reduce carbon emissions and dependence on oil.

Ecotect works hard to carefully specify non toxic materials in the construction and finishing of every building we design. This ensures that both trades people and occupants are protected from harmful chemicals - thereby upholding the ‘purpose’ of the NZ Building Act 2004, which provides for people who use buildings, "to do so safely and without endangering their health in a sustainable way".

Our work also includes collaborating with industry partners towards decreasing the use of toxic timber treatments in our industry with success in the use of non toxic Boron used with Douglas Fir timber as a substitute for toxic LOSP and CCA timber treatments. AND WE SUCCEEDED IN 2011!

Using the latest 3D design technology, our clients are able to visualise their new home from any perspective inside or out, even ‘fly through’ movies are possible! This realistic impression means that design details may be fully appreciated, allowing changes to be made, before final working drawings are prepared.

At Ecotect, our team of designers and technicians enables us to manage increasing workloads while continuing to provide clients with a high level of quality service. All staff regularly attend industry education seminars to keep abreast of New Zealand’s rapidly changing building industry.

Our Fees are very competitive against other services of similar high standard, and always very good value for money. We believe a well designed home is a superior investment, saving you money in the long run by appreciating in added value. Fees are charged on a sliding scale percentage basis for new homes and an hourly rate for renovations. Details of such are finalised at an initial consultation.

We believe a well designed home should be affordable and provide optimum safety & comfort with very low energy use, while minimising unsustainable environmental impacts.
