Poppy Pads is an on-line shop giving women information and choice about the type of sanitary product that they use. Poppy Pads offer NZ made washable cloth sanitary pads and, The Mooncup®, a reusable alternative to tampons. Reusable products are being received with enthusiasm by women who are keen to save money, whilst doing something for the environment, minimising waste and, looking after their bodies too.

It has been estimated that one woman will likely use an incredible 11000 sanitary products in a lifetime. According to the Women’s Environmental Network, in the UK alone, more than 3 billion disposable items are bought every year (£370 million worth!). The amount of natural resources used, pollution produced from chemical processes and, menstrual waste created from disposable products around the world must be staggering! An enormous amount of unnecessary items (and money spent) that are then either incinerated, consigned to landfill or end up in the sewerage system and maybe reappear in rivers and seas.

There is a cost benefit too. A set of cloth pads will last for about 5 years and The Mooncup will last for approximately 10 years. Roughly $450 could be saved over 5 years if using cloth pads or, if using The Mooncup, the cost will be recouped over just 6 months.

Women have been pleasantly surprised to discover that the cloth pads of today are very different from the bulky rags that they imagine women might have used in days gone by. Fabrics available today allow pads to be made that are comparable with their disposable counterparts. Pads can be super-absorbent but without the bulk. Like disposables, Poppy Pads have an all-in-one design and wings that snap snugly around underwear. They are soft and comfortable and wash easily along with other laundry. Different styles and sizes cater for the lightest to heaviest of periods, postpartum days or stress incontinence. They are appealing too, and come in a variety of fun, funky and colourful prints. Who said pads had to be boring white!

Or, perhaps an alternative to tampons? The Mooncup could be an answer - a small cup made from soft silicone rubber comfortably worn internally like a tampon but which collects menstrual fluid rather than absorbing it and, unlike tampons, the Mooncup is not a disposable product so only one needs to be brought!
