Prometheus is New Zealand’s leading ethical finance organization. We offer savings and investment accounts to people who want to see their money doing good through helping to build a sustainable and responsible world. We then on-lend investors funds to businesses and individual projects that are environmentally sustainable and socially responsible.

Prometheus lends to financially acceptable projects in the following categories: eco-housing, renewable energy, organic growing and retailing, resource recovery and recycling, habitat protection & reforestation, complementary health and education.

To attract the funds needed to finance loans to all the above sectors we offer a range of savings and investment accounts, from modest children’s savings accounts through to our premium Climate Saver term account. This latter account offers a return of 7% per annum, fixed for a 2 year term, for investments over $10,000. The funds invested in this account are earmarked for projects that reduce carbon emissions, including providing subsidized loan funds for solar water heating installations with the support of finance assistance from the Energy Efficiency and Conservation Authority.

Prometheus welcomes loan applications from both young and established sustainable business enterprises or from people wanting to make sustainable lifestyle changes. We lend to those building their dream eco-home as well as those involved in community eco-building developments.

We are willing to be flexible in looking for solutions in situations where unusual legal structures and the lack of individual unit title ownership deters mainstream lenders. We have, over the past decade, made building and development loans to a wide range of individual eco-homes as well as to a number of eco-village and community projects including Earthsong Eco-Neighbourhood in Waitakere, Awaawaroa bay Eco-Village and Orapiu Grove Farm Partnership on Waiheke Island, Otamatea and Kohatu Toa Eco-Villages in Northland, and the Lindisfarne community in the Coromandel.
