Over the last 14 years Authentic Straw Bale Construction Ltd have been building houses using alternative materials including Straw Bale, Compressed Earth Block and also Rammed Earth walls.

With 35 years experience building houses for customers using conventional techniques, we made the move to alternative materials to accommodate a growing market sector.

Our approach combines straw bale and earth construction techniques with conventional building materials, creating affordable homes and buildings that are not only beautiful with a natural character, but also environmentally friendly.

The notion of building anything out of straw may initially seem outrageous, but all things considered, straw bales literally stack up as a remarkable building material. Produced from a waste product, grown in a short period of time and easy to modify, yet flexible enough to be used in a variety of ways, solid, substantial, durable and easy to maintain.

The concept of building with these natural materials is not new, people have been constructing homes using earth and straw throughout history. These materials were used because they were reliable, easy to obtain and, properly constructed, exhibit great durability - the oldest standing straw bale houses are over two hundred years-old, while the Great Wall of China has been maintained for thousands of years!

New Zealand has adopted the concept enthusiastically, resulting in structures ranging from simple garden walls to commercial developments, numbering over two hundred homes at the last count.

Authentic Straw Bale Construction Ltd have a wealth of experience with earth block, rammed earth and straw bale construction projects, working with customers all over the South Island to address their needs.
