Climate Action Festival in Wellington
Saturday, December 06, 2008 - Saturday, December 06, 2008
Saturday, December the 6th 2008 is the International Day of Action on Climate Change. It is a day for communities to come together to take action on climate change and in doing so, call on world leaders to take urgent action. It coincides with the United Nations Climate talks to be held in Poznan, Poland this year from December 1st to 12th.
Last year’s inspirational Climate Action Festival in Wellington’s Civic Square attracted over 2000 people, who came along to find out more about what they can do to tackle climate change. Like a true festival, people enjoyed live music, dance and food; and celebrated what people, organisations and businesses are already effectively doing.
This year is Wellington’s third Climate Action Festival, and it is set to be the biggest yet! We are holding a picnic-style event at Waitangi Park, between 11am and 4pm on Saturday 6th of December. Not only will we be showcasing the multitude of community groups and businesses offering climate friendly options, accompanied by local bands and food; but we will also be officially launching the New Zealand answer to The 350 Challenge.
So what is The 350 Challenge about?
It really is quite simple. 350 parts per million (ppm) is the concentration of carbon dioxide (CO2) in the atmosphere that is safe for our planet. Unfortunately the current concentration is at 387ppm, and has been increasing due to human activities. Luckily the effect of this CO2 overshoot takes a while to kick in, but we only have a decade or two or else we risk becoming an ice-free planet, which would seriously destabilise our climate systems, cause sea-levels to rise, acidify the oceans and so on.
So The 350 Challenge is not the typical campaign; it is an invitation and challenge to join the nationwide conversation about how NZ can reach the 350ppm target, and who we could be for the world in the challenge to tackle climate change.
