EM (Effective Micro-Organisms) composting
Sunday, October 22, 2006
http://www.ccc.govt.nz/Waste/Composting/EMComposting.asp
Feed your food scraps to EM bugs. Effective Micro-organisms (EM) are a great way to recycle most kitchen organics (not bones or liquids), especially if you have limited space.
Simply place your food scraps in an airtight container and add EM Bokashi to kick start the fermentation process. At the same time EM Bokashi neutralises odours and breaks down the food, producing a liquid fertilizer. The composting process is completed by burying your fermented food scraps in the garden.
EM Bokashi is a bran-based material that has been “seeded” with “Effective Micro-organisms” and dried to make storage easy. EM Bokashi composting systems can be purchased from Council service centres.
